Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her creative and artistic side when she was a young girl because of her Aunt Denise. The aunt she had was a nurse and worked night shifts so that she could dedicate her time to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay immediately was captivated when she showed her an old 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay learned that art can be a powerful instrument for social activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and pushed DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents, but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family has been for generations. Her father was a witness to the historic march of Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer and was inspired to create a film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she received qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism when she was just a young student. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay was assigned to the monitor and investigate the residence for a specific juror. Her tasks left her disappointed by journalism and she decided to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay was offered a job straight out college, as a young publicist for a studio. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. In addition to PR her agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
